In today’s world, we presume that old fashioned values are a thing of the past, that getting rich requires a life of crime, murder and mayhem. Well at least that’s what the movies have us believe. Shortcuts are the only possible way to get rich in a world where 90% of the population are barely or just making ends meet.
How does Design feature in all of this? Well, design is all about problem solving. If in the interest of creating ‘pretty’ solutions to problems, designers tend to create a bigger problem. In the ‘Tao of Jeet Kune Do’ Bruce Lee says that art is never decoration, embellishment and that simplicity is the ultimate sophistication. In the light of these statements, Lee proceeded to distill the essence of combat arts from the mess of flowery forms and 3000 year old dogmatic disciplines and doctrines into practical, functional fighting in it’s purest essence.
Similarly design today is continuing to distill it’s pristine principles that guide us in finding design solutions. Even the design geniuses at Apple have admitted their flawed skeumorphic approach to design in favor of a flat, minimal style of design heralded by Jony Ive. Steve Jobs knew what he was doing when he left his ‘real’ legacy in the hands of young Jonathan.
The growth of mobile has forced designers & developers into searching for simplicity, effectiveness and directness in design; both aesthetic and functional. The short attention span, smaller screen sizes and gesture based touch input has maximized interaction while minimizing inputs. I write this on a blogging platform that enables me to write in a simple and elegant, distraction free environment.
All this focus on simplicity & minimalism might appear to be a fad or trend but deeper introspection shows that the world welcomes this renaissance of transparency and honesty. A refreshing change it certainly is when mired in a mess of data bombardment from all directions. It is intuitive and intrinsic of human nature and helps simplify the nature of social interactions in an increasingly shrinking and connected world which ironically is exploding from within.
